The PetroAlert Model 8900 combines the selectivity of gas chromatography with the sensitivity, broad dynamic range, and hydrocarbon selectivity of a flame ionization detector (FID) providing fast analysis of C1-C5 hydrocarbons and Dimethyl Ether required in Mud Logging for Oil & Gas exploration.

The PetroAlert 8900 C1-C5/DME analysis uses a dual injection technique; essentially, two separate chromatograms are combined, via dual injection valves, into a single chromatographic analysis. Each analytical train uses a timed backflushto-vent to strip off moisture and C6+ components. For the Dimethyl Ether analysis, the entire analytical column is set to backflush after the elution of Dimethyl Ether while the remainder of the C1-C5 analysis proceeds. The C1-C5 analysis uses a pre-cut column in series with the analytical column. Backflush of the pre-cut column is timed so that only the C1-C5 components are allowed to elute to the analytical column, while heavier components are diverted to a vent. C1-C5 hydrocarbons are then separated on the analytical column and elute to the flame ionization detector (FID) after the Dimethyl Ether analysis.
